Want - As defined by Dictionary.com "to feel a need or a desire for; wish for."
What defines a persons needs vs. wants. Is it society, their job, their interest in an item that they must have or need to have in order to survive? We all know the basic needs people must have that allow us to survive....food, shelter, care.....but what about the time when you come across an item that you see and you know in your head that you absolutely want it, but you then think "Do I need it"? Take Apple products, this company was secondary at most to Microsoft for so many years, or decades for that matter, and in recent past they have basically gone from a second ranking company for products they make to a virtual tie or in some other opinions a leader in the products they make. Outside of the computer, Apple first released an MP3 player on the market at a time when the MP3 was not a normal thing. Many of us still remember the record, cassette tape or CD, but now this product called the IPod was something everyone seemed to want and it started to grow in popularity. As time moved on, Apple released more IPods, changed their looks, made the products easier and more user friendly and have now become this firestorm in computers, mp3 players, phones that are mp3 players and now are starting with tablets.
I have found this new obsession with Apple products. I had to get the IPhone when it was released as I thought, I love my IPod and I carry a cell phone everywhere, this item can consolidate my life into one item in my pocket (besides my wallet and keys of course). It took me a little while as I hesitated switching to AT&T, their sole carrier for the phone part, but am hearing that they will go to Verizon in 2011 FINALLY, so I will switch back. My father then changed his computer after so many years and bought a MacBook Pro. He showed it to me and said "Help me figure out this new computer." So I dove in and found it to be very easy to use and thought, I want one. So I sold my latest HP laptop to my company and bought my own MacBook Pro and have never been happier. Now this new product they released called the IPad is the one item that has caused the most thinking in my mind about wanting one.
I have read so many articles, reviews and even watched Youtube videos about it to see all the things that it can do. Basically it is a BIGGER Ipod touch, but this item still intrigues me. I have literally gone through many of the features it has and tried to see if there were enough justifiable reasons on why I should get one. What I am coming across is that almost everything about it I have on the IPhone, it's just that the IPhone is smaller and the IPad is not a phone. The one thing that stands out as a justifiable reason for wanting one is that the screen is a better size for video playing for my son when we go on trips to keep him occupied. Yes he can watch videos on my phone and play games too, but that screen size makes it so much better. Games look better and seem to play better too but do I want to carry something else with me? People say it does not replace the computer for you, but it is just so damn cool to play with. Only more playing with it and time will tell if it can be of use for me. What makes it even more intriguing and just too damn convenient is the fact that Apple is opening it up with Verizon for the 3G service just in time for the Christmas season. So maybe I will ask for it for a Christmas / Birthday present or maybe my business mind will try and figure out more items that I own and don't use that I can sell to make the money and purchase one. This is also the time of year that I am asked by my wife and mother in law for a Christmas list for myself and I just can't think of anything substantial to ask for.
So is the IPad a need.....no. Is the IPad a want.......you bet.
